At the age of nine, Maria Trusa’s mother left her home in the Dominican Republic to earn money for her impoverished family. Her alcoholic father forced Maria into the care of a cult leader who beat and raped her. Maria escaped to the U.S. to start anew. But difficulties learning English, a teen pregnancy, and a husband who mistreated her all stood in Maria’s way of success. She refused to give in, fighting to learn the language, divorcing her husband and working her way to director of a medical practice as a single mother. After a near death experience, she decided to risk it all, quitting her comfy job to start a new medical practice with the mission to help the underserved and uninsured population. Formé Medical Center is now growing rapidly helping over 38,000 patients in its first two years.
