The Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, which dominates the city, contains many works of art, such as the large Baroque altarpiece covered in gold located in the sanctuary. The church and monastery of San Juan de la Reyes was built for the Franciscan Order. It is the most important building ever erected by the Catholic monarchs in the Isabelline Baroque style. The construction of Segovia Cathedral began in 1525 during the reign of Charles V. It is notable for its sheer size and Gothic style. The Baroque interior is remarkable, as is the Santa Catarina chapel, which has been converted into a Diocesan Museum.
