History of Isicathamiya (07:36)

FREE PREVIEW

Originating in the rural mines near KwaZulu-Natal as a form of self-entertainment, this style of music tells the story of African culture; the singers tiptoe while performing. Joseph Shabala forms Ladysmith Black Mambazo after a dream; women are now eligible to compete.

Educating the Youth (08:02)

Ladysmith Black Mambazo serves as an international ambassador for Isicathamiya and collaborates with Paul Simon and Thomas Hampson. All the members of the Green Berets have disabilities. Chris Nutli teaches Isicathamiya to students and establishes a competition at the Playhouse Company.

Competition (06:45)

Moses Mcobothi organizes a competition for 30 Isicathamiya groups. Members of the Green Berets, OBen 10, the Zulu Messengers, and Inqaba Yevangeli dress in costumes and perform all night. "Swank" guys compete for best attire; audience members pick a judge for the night.
