In 1974, Maria and her family seek information about her son Stavros, hearing rumors of ambushed soldiers. Turkish forces raid her Cyprus village and her household flees.
Stavros searches for Maria but misses her while she prays at church. He speaks with his auntie, who relays his message about surviving the ambush; he promises to soon return.
Maria lights a candle and listens to local announcements on the radio. For 30 years, she never leaves her house. A year after her passing, Stavros' bones are found in a mass grave.
