The Chinese Communist Party plans to use big data to track behavior and provide rewards or punishments as part of a social credits system. Chinese cities have over 200 million surveillance cameras; some are being outfitted with facial recognition, body scanning, and geo-tracking.
Some people are not worried about their actions being tracked and judged by the social credit system. Criminal, academic, and medical records will be factored into each citizen's score, along with shopping habits and online behavior.
Investigative journalist Leo Hu worries about the dark side of the social credit system. He believes the government is lying to the people about the use and consequences of the system. He was blacklisted under a pilot version of the system and found himself unable to operate in modern society.
The city, home to the Turkic Uyghur people, has been under surveillance since 2016. The Chinese overnment makes many Uyghur residents undergo fingerprinting and facial recognition scans. Most Uyghur men receie untrustworthy credit status and are detained in camps.
Hu worries his attempts to expose the social credit system will lead to the punishment of his friends and famil. He believes the system is the first step to a digital totalitarian state.
