The risk of concussion to participants in American football, boxing, and hockey is well known, but the world’s most popular sport also presents significant danger, especially for girls. Cindy Parlow Cone discusses her time with the U.S. women’s national soccer team and the role that concussions played in shortening her career.
Only football and ice hockey were responsible for more teen concussions than girls’ soccer during the 2013-14 school year. Teenager Gracie Hussey was first diagnosed with a concussion at age 7. She eventually had to quit playing soccer after suffering more brain injuries and developing post-concussion syndrome.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta explains common concussion symptoms and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative cognitive disease. Triax Technologies has developed a headband that can alert coaches, parents, and trainers when a serious collision has occurred. Cone’s company has also developed a detection device.
