Make sure the scene is safe and then tap the victim to check for responsiveness. Call 911; if not alone, ask if anyone knows CPR, and ask for an AED. Check for normal breathing.

Rebecca Knowles and her husband performed CPR on their son when he suffered a cardiac arrest at home. Dr. Andrea Hinkle diagnosed Long QT Syndrome and put him in a medically induced coma to minimize brain damage. He has recovered.

The Knowles family has given back to their community by launching a program to teach students and teachers to save lives. After training, a local school principal saved a man's life at a baseball game.

Emily's Story (07:45)
Adamczak's daughter suffered syncope and died of sudden cardiac arrest on the soccer field. She and her family teach CPR to others to help save lives. They have introduced a program into schools and have trained 17,000 students.

Adamczak's efforts helped pass New York state legislation requiring high schools to teach hands-only CPR. Her daughter's soccer league was unprepared for how to handle cardiac arrest.
Third Link in the Chain of Survival (04:44)
Adamczak shows AED components and demonstrates how to use the machine. Do not stop chest compressions until the patient revives or emergency help arrives. AEDs are placed in many public and private buildings.
