Frank Anderson, M.D. describes how he came to be a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. This talk will be about working with clients and examining psychopharmacology and how medications work on the brain and neurotransmitters. Anderson leads the audience in a short guided meditation.

Introduction to Parts Work (18:49)

Anderson shows the trailer for "Inside Out" and explains why it is such an important movie for mental health professionals. Anderson shares a story about parts work therapy in helping diagnose and help a clinically depressed patient.

Internal Family Systems Therapy (18:18)

Bruce Hershey explains Internal Family System in a short video. Anderson talks about parts work and ways to encourage healthy relations to internal parts. Working with medications is crucial to treating symptoms of mental illness but do not cure the underlying mental problems. Anderson speaks about the difference between biological and psychological disorder.

Parts, Prescriptions, and Biology (15:59)

Anderson takes questions and comments from the audience about prescribing psychotherapeutic drugs and antidepressants. The overlap of the interface between biology and psychology is constantly changing for all patients.

Biological Button (22:17)

Anderson speaks about the biological symptoms that can arise from psychological roots. Extreme parts are the portions of the psyche that do not respond well to medications and lead to many of the more extreme psychological behaviors. Anderson talks about manager parts and the relief that they crave.

Changing the Brain (10:44)

Anderson presents a short video about neuroplasticity and brain changes. He talks about Norman Doidge, author of "The Brain That Changes Itself" before leading a guided meditation break.

Networks of Neurons (19:06)

Anderson speaks about the work of Jaak Panksepp and its import on neuroscience and psychotherapy. The brain processes different emotions through specialized neuronal networks using specific neurotransmitters. Anderson focuses on the fear network of the brain.

Down Regulation (15:04)

Anderson speaks about down regulation of the reactive and sympathetic nervous systems. Over inhibition of the nervous system is a new area of study and has effects as far reaching as over-stimulation of the nervous system. Anderson fields questions about the "self" and bipolar disorder.

Working With Parts (19:45)

Hear audio of Anderson doing parts work with a psychotherapy client. Anderson helps the patient identify and listen to her parts that are impeding the efficacy of her medication.

Working With Parts: Questions and Feedback (20:45)

Anderson answers questions about the video of his parts work. Parts work is dependent on the therapist and patient listening and acknowledging the various parts of the psyche that have issues. Anderson talks about dealing with suicidal parts of the psyche. An audience member asks about liability issues and safety plans.

Excitatory or Inhibitory Neurotransmitters (21:25)

Anderson uses slides to explain the processes and structure of a nerve cell and the chemistry going on in the synaptic space. Neurotransmitters come in two types, excitatory and inhibitory. Anderson talks about which neurotransmitters fall under each type and how they affect the nervous system.

Hitting the Right Receptors (21:44)

Anderson gives a general overview of which medications influence which neurotransmitters. Psychopharmacologists are getting better at identifying the nerve cell receptors that drugs interact with. Anderson talks about the mechanisms that common drug classes use for their efficacy.

Side Effects of SSRIs (16:31)

Anderson speaks about the side effects of various SSRI class drugs. Audience members ask about specific side effects and prescribing to geriatric patients. Anderson talks about studies into the efficacy of SSRIs and other anti-depressants. He also talks about the hormone estrogen and its effects on serotonin in the nervous system.

New to the Market Drugs (22:58)

Anderson talks about new drugs and psychopharmaceuticals. Some street and party drugs, like ketamine and ecstasy, show positive usage in controlled doses. Mood stabilizers are powerful, but they have many side effects and complex interactions. Anderson talks about potentially deadly side effects that can occur when patients are not attentive to their dosing.

Withdrawal Symptoms and Benzodiazepines (24:17)

Anderson answers a question about switching SSRIs and discontinuing SSRI medication for outpatients. Anderson speaks about his experience with patients discontinuing various medications and how to effectively wean patients off drugs. Anderson talks about usage and dosing of benzodiazepines for depression and mood disorders.

Anti-Adrenergic Drugs and Neuroleptics (18:19)

Anderson talks about the class of anti-adrenergic drugs, commonly known as beta blockers. He discusses neuroleptics and anti-psychotic drugs and talks about the dangers of serotonin syndrome when using SSRIs combined with anti-psychotics. Anderson fields questions about drug prescription combinations.

Atypical Neuroleptics (14:45)

Anderson highlights the disconnect between drug marketing materials and actual evidence based efficacy. An audience member asks about using medications during pregnancy. Anderson answers questions about dysthymia, anti-depressants, and Alzheimer's.

Sleep Aids & Addiction Cravings (14:16)

Anderson talks about the lack of good choices to prescribe as sleep aids for people with psychiatric disorders. Audience members ask questions about sleep medication side effects and dosing. Anderson discusses drugs for sleep that are new to the market as well as drugs that reduce addiction withdrawal cravings.

Opioid Addiction & Alternative Treatments (12:05)

Anderson talks about his reticence to prescribe opioids for any reason and discusses the opioid and heroine epidemic. Anderson speaks about alternative treatment methods, including TMS, acupuncture, exercise, and diet.
